Health & Safety Policy
Training Environment & Physical Safety1. Physical Capability & Medical Fitness
Scope: Timian Physical Skills Courses Only
This section applies exclusively to Timian courses that include physical intervention skills. It does not apply to classroom-based theory courses such as Psychological Safety or Debriefing.
Low Risk, High Safety:
The physical techniques taught are bio-mechanically efficient and designed to be at a very low level of risk. However, to ensure the absolute safety of everyone throughout the training, we require confirmation of fitness to participate.
The Process:
- Mandatory Questionnaire: Before commencing any physical activity, every delegate must complete the Timian Registration and Health Questionnaire.
- Self-Certification: You must certify that you do not have a medical condition that would prevent you from training.
- Medical Release: If you do have a relevant medical condition, you must provide written consent from your employer or GP confirming you are fit to participate.
Note: Without a completed questionnaire or necessary medical release, the Senior Trainer cannot permit a trainee to participate in the physical elements of the course.
2. Responsibilities
JL Academy's Duty
To provide qualified, BILD ACT certified instructors who prioritise safety. To conduct dynamic risk assessments of the training environment before commencing physical activity.

To ensure any in-house venue provided is suitable, clean, and free from hazards. To ensure delegates sent for training are physically capable of undertaking the role.
The Delegate's Duty
To follow all instructions given by the trainer. To dress appropriately (loose clothing, flat shoes, no jewellery). To stop immediately if they or a partner experience pain.
3. Venue Requirements (In-House Training)
If JL Academy is delivering training at your premises, the room must meet specific safety standards to comply with our insurance and certification:
- Space: Minimum recommended space of 140 square metres (approx. 12m x 12m) for physical groups to allow safe movement.
- Flooring: Must be clean, dry, and free from slip hazards. Carpet or mats are preferred.
- Temperature: Adequate ventilation and temperature control must be available.
- First Aid: Access to a First Aid kit and a designated First Aider on site.
4. Incident & Injury Reporting
In the unlikely event of an injury occurring during training:
- The activity will be stopped immediately.
- First Aid will be administered by the site First Aider.
- The incident will be logged in the JL Academy Accident Book.
- A RIDDOR report will be filed if the injury falls under reportable criteria.
This policy is reviewed annually to ensure compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
