People. Practice. Culture. Through understanding.
JLA brings together specialist expertise, professional experience and an ethical approach to development to help organisations strengthen people, practice, capability and culture.
Development should create meaningful and lasting value.
Better understanding, stronger practice, safer environments and confident people with the knowledge and support to do their work well.
Development with purpose.
JLA was built around a shared belief that effective development starts with understanding the people, organisation and context, then choosing the right response.
That response may be an established specialist programme, bespoke learning, coaching, consultancy, programme design or a combination of expertise working together.
We care about what happens beyond the learning itself: how people use it, how teams develop, how practice changes and how organisations create the conditions for people to thrive.
Deep expertise. Complementary perspective.
JLA is led by James and Lisa Hourihan, combining more than three decades of specialist learning and behaviour expertise with healthcare, communication, quality, partnerships and programme development.
Their different professional perspectives strengthen JLA’s ability to work across individuals, teams, organisations and multidisciplinary programmes.

What we believe shapes how we work.
Our values shape how we listen, design, collaborate, deliver and take responsibility for the work we do.
Understand deeply
Context matters. We seek to understand people, behaviour, experience, systems and organisational priorities before shaping the response.
Put people at the centre
Development should respect the people receiving support, the professionals delivering it and the environments in which they live and work.
Act ethically
Dignity, safety, proportionality, professional responsibility and respect guide the decisions we make and the practice we support.
Use evidence & expertise
We bring together evidence, professional knowledge, experience and organisational context to support thoughtful and practical decisions.
Collaborate generously
Good work grows through shared expertise, strong relationships and a willingness to connect people, ideas and opportunities.
Take responsibility
We care about the quality, coherence and impact of the work we put our name to, from initial design through delivery and evaluation.
Understanding changes how we respond.
Behaviour, communication, performance and culture become clearer when we understand the context around them.
Our approach is grounded in professional curiosity: listening carefully, understanding experience and recognising the factors that shape how people respond.
That understanding supports thoughtful decisions, proportionate responses, stronger relationships and environments in which people have greater opportunity to develop and thrive.
Excellence grows where people feel safe to speak, reflect, learn and contribute.
Psychological safety creates the conditions for honest learning, constructive challenge, professional confidence and continuous improvement.
Speak
Create space for people to ask questions, raise concerns, share ideas and contribute openly.
Reflect
Make reflection a normal part of professional learning, improvement and better decision-making.
Challenge
Encourage thoughtful questions and constructive challenge that strengthen practice and organisations.
Grow
Support people to develop confidence, capability, judgement and professional excellence.
Experience across people, practice and organisations.
JLA’s capability brings together specialist practice, professional development and organisational expertise.
A connected network of specialist expertise.
JLA’s associate network expands the expertise, insight and opportunities we can bring to organisations.
Associates contribute in different ways according to their expertise and the needs of the work. They may deliver directly, advise a programme, contribute to design, support development, connect organisations or help create new collaborative routes.
This gives JLA access to a broad multidisciplinary perspective across clinicians, educators, psychological specialists, senior leaders, business expertise and other subject-matter professionals.
A clear path from understanding to impact.
Our delivery model keeps people, purpose and quality connected throughout the work.
Understand
Listen, explore the context and clarify the people, needs and outcomes at the heart of the work.
Design
Shape the programme, intervention or development approach around the requirement.
Assemble
Connect the people, disciplines, resources and specialist expertise needed for the work.
Deliver
Coordinate high-quality delivery with clear communication, responsibility and professional standards.
Evaluate
Review impact, listen to feedback and use what we learn to strengthen future development.
Wider expertise. Clear responsibility.
JLA can act as prime contractor and specialist delivery integrator for work that requires multiple disciplines, different forms of expertise or coordinated programme delivery.
Collaboration strengthens what JLA can deliver.
Our multidisciplinary model allows different specialists to contribute their expertise while JLA provides programme direction, coordination, quality and a clear point of organisational responsibility.
We believe development should leave people, practice and organisations stronger.
If you are developing people, practice, leadership or culture, we would be pleased to hear what you are working towards.
