Current training arrangements
Existing training, refresher arrangements, staff coverage, competency expectations and whether current provision reflects the needs of the service.
The audit prompts organisations to consider more than the course itself. It looks at the wider systems, practice and implementation issues that can influence whether training is appropriate and effective.
Existing training, refresher arrangements, staff coverage, competency expectations and whether current provision reflects the needs of the service.
Positive Behaviour Support, prevention, de-escalation, individual planning and how staff understand and respond to behaviours of concern.
Whether individual risks, triggers, support strategies and response plans are clearly understood and reflected in practice.
The circumstances in which physical intervention may be considered, how need is identified and whether practice is supported by appropriate organisational oversight.
Incident patterns, post-incident debrief, reflective learning, staff support and whether lessons are translated into changes in practice.
Leadership oversight, multidisciplinary input, monitoring, review processes and the organisation’s ability to embed training beyond the classroom.
The audit is intended for organisations that need a practical starting point before deciding what further assessment, training or specialist support may be appropriate.
A practical self-review resource for organisations considering physical intervention, behaviour support or related workforce training requirements.
Use the audit to review what is already in place, identify areas that may need further exploration and prepare for more informed conversations about training, implementation and organisational support.
Physical intervention training should not be considered in isolation. Training requirements sit alongside individual needs, behaviour support, organisational practice, governance, incident learning and the way skills are implemented after training.
This audit gives organisations a structured way to begin that review. It is intended to support internal reflection and help identify the questions that may need to be explored in more depth.
It does not replace individual risk assessment, clinical, safeguarding, legal or regulatory advice. It does not determine BILD ACT compliance and should not be used to prescribe a particular form or level of physical intervention training.
The Physical Intervention & Training Needs Audit is provided as an introductory organisational self-review resource. It is designed to support structured discussion, reflection and the identification of areas that may warrant further exploration.
It is not a formal risk assessment, clinical assessment, safeguarding assessment, legal or regulatory audit, or a determination of compliance with BILD ACT certification requirements or any other external standard.
The audit should not be used in isolation to determine whether physical intervention is required, to prescribe a particular intervention, or to determine the level or type of training that an organisation should commission.
Decisions relating to behaviour support, restrictive practice, physical intervention, staff training and individual risk should be informed by appropriate organisational governance, professional judgement, individual assessment, relevant legislation, guidance, safeguarding responsibilities and local policies.
Organisations remain responsible for assessing their own requirements and ensuring that any training, policies, procedures and practice are appropriate for the people they support, their workforce and the environments in which they operate.
